Pro Tip: Which Model Should You Choose?

90% of customers choose the 4GB/64GB model - it's the perfect balance of performance and value. The entry 2GB/32GB is really just for basic use and may frustrate you with app refreshes. If you're a power user, consider the 8GB/128GB model for maximum performance.

SECTION 1 – Pre-Installation Confidence Builder

Self-Assessment Quiz

Question Yes → Continue No → Re-consider
Do you have basic hand tools (7mm & 10mm sockets, Phillips #2, T20 Torx)?
Can you safely disconnect the battery and wait 5 min?
Are you comfortable working in a confined space (dashboard cavity) for up to 2h?
Do you have a clean, well-lit workspace (≥500 lumens) and a helper (optional)?
Have you read the entire guide once before starting?
⚠️ Important: If you answered "No" to any row, pause. Gather the missing tool or arrange a helper before proceeding. Skipping this step is the single biggest predictor of a "mid-install panic".

Exact Tool List (with Model Numbers)

# Tool Model / Part # Why It's Needed
1 7mm socket + 1/4" ratchet Craftsman 7mm 1/4-in (CMM7-1/4) Removes the six factory bolts behind stock screen
2 10mm socket + 1/4" ratchet GearWrench 10mm 1/4-in (GW-10-1/4) Disconnects negative battery terminal
3 #2 Phillips screwdriver Wiha 26191 Two Phillips screws behind cigarette lighter socket
4 T20 Torx screwdriver Wera 050 T20 Secures the new unit's mounting brackets
5 Plastic trim removal tools (blue) – set of 3 Neiko 02256A Pops clips without marring panels
6 20-pack zip-ties (3mm width) VELCRO® Brand 20-Pack Cable management
7 LED work lamp (≥500 lumens) DEWALT DCL050 Illuminates dark dash cavity
8 Microfiber cleaning cloth (5 pack) 3M 604 Keeps connectors dust-free
9 Electrical tape (black, 1 in) 3M 1900 Secures loose wires
10 Multimeter (digital) Fluke 115 Verifies voltage before reconnecting battery
💡 Pro Tip: Keep a magnetic parts tray on the passenger side; it will catch every bolt and screw you remove, preventing "lost-in-cushion" moments.

SECTION 2 – Preparation Phase (Ultra-Detailed)

2.1 Choose Workspace
Requirements: Garage or driveway with ≥22°C (71°F) ambient temperature. Avoid direct sunlight (causes glare).
Look: Clean, uncluttered floor
Feel: Warm but not hot
Sound: Quiet, no HVAC blowing directly on dash
If too cold (<15°C): Plastic clips become brittle. Warm the car by turning on heater for 5 min before starting.
2.2 Lighting Setup
Mount LED headlamp (500 lumens) on passenger seat headrest, angle 45° toward dashboard.
Look: Even white light, no shadows
Sound: Soft hum of LED (≤30 dB)
2.3 Tool Organization
Lay out tools on non-metallic tray. Place sockets in row (7mm left, 10mm right) for quick grab.
Feel: Tools snug, not wobbling
Sound: Light clink when moving socket
2.4 Vehicle Preparation
1. Pull the parking brake
2. Shift to Park (P)
3. Turn off ignition and remove key
4. Open driver's door to allow airflow
Look: Gear lever in "P"
Sound: Click of parking brake

SECTION 3 – Battery Disconnection (Critical Safety)

⚠️ CRITICAL: This step prevents electrical damage and ensures safety. Do NOT skip!
3.1 Locate Negative Battery Terminal
Find the negative battery terminal (black, "–") on driver-side battery.
Warning: Accidentally touching positive (+) can cause sparks. Double-check color and label before proceeding.
3.2 Disconnect Terminal
Use 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet to loosen negative terminal bolt.
  • Torque needed: ≤5 Nm (hand-tight)
  • Apply steady pressure; feel a "click" when bolt releases
Feel: Firm resistance then sudden release
Sound: Light "click" as bolt loosens
3.3 Secure Cable Away
Remove negative cable and tuck away from fuse box using zip-tie (no more than 30mm from terminal).
Why: Prevents cable from accidentally re-contacting terminal during work.
3.4 Wait for Capacitor Discharge
Wait 5 minutes (set timer) - Allows capacitors in factory head unit and CAN-BUS modules to discharge fully.
⚠️ Skipping wait can cause voltage spikes that fry the new unit!
Reassurance: If you hear a faint "pop" when disconnecting, that's normal – it's the capacitor releasing stored energy. No damage occurs.

SECTION 4 – Trim Removal (Most Anxiety-Inducing Part)

🎉 Great job getting this far! You're about to complete the most nerve-wracking part. It gets easier from here.

4.1 Air-Conditioning Vents (Front)

1 Remove AC Vents
Insert tool at 3 o'clock position of vent (right side), near center of vent.
  • Push straight outward with 2 kg pressure (≈4.4 lb)
  • Feel a soft "pop" as vent disengages
Look: Vent lifts cleanly
Sound: Light "snap"
Feel: No resistance after pop
If you hear a sharp crack: You've over-levered a clip; stop, replace the clip (≈$2).

4.2 Gear-Shifter Surround

2 Remove Gear Shifter Surround
Slip tool under bottom lip of surround (at 6 o'clock), directly beneath shifter knob.
  • Angle: (straight back)
  • Push 2 kg straight backward
Cue: A single "click" per side, then surround lifts free
If resistance >5 kg: Hidden screw may be present; re-inspect

4.3 Six 7mm Bolts Behind Factory Screen

Bolt # Exact Location Tool Torque (re-install)
1 Upper-left corner, 12mm from screen edge 7mm socket 2 Nm
2 Upper-right corner 7mm socket 2 Nm
3 Lower-left corner 7mm socket 2 Nm
4 Lower-right corner 7mm socket 2 Nm
5 Center-left (mid-height) 7mm socket 2 Nm
6 Center-right 7mm socket 2 Nm
Technique: Insert socket, turn counter-clockwise to loosen. Do NOT use impact tools.
💡 Tip: Store the removed bolts in your vehicle's cup holder so you don't lose them during installation.

SECTION 5 – Factory Unit Removal

📸 IMPORTANT: Take a photo of the factory unit with all connectors attached before disconnecting anything!
Step Connector Details Sensory Cue
5.1 20-pin power harness Black-grey plug, tab on right side. Press tab downward (≈0.5 kg) and pull straight Feel: Firm "click" when tab releases
5.2 USB retention cable USB-type-A with locking latch on left. Press latch upward (≈0.2 kg) and pull Sound: Soft "pop"
5.3 GPS antenna Small U-FL connector, clip on top. Squeeze clip inward (≈0.3 kg) and pull Feel: Light resistance, then release
5.4 Climate control ribbon 15-pin gray ribbon, locking tab on right. Lift tab upward (≈0.2 kg) Sound: Gentle "ripple"
5.5 CAN-BUS connector 20-pin purple plug, white triangle points up. Press release tab (≈0.4 kg) Feel: Distinct "click"
Reassurance: If you hear a faint crackle when pulling a connector, that's just static discharge – completely normal.

SECTION 6 – CAN-BUS Adapter Installation

1 Locate CAN-BUS Port
Find the port near steering column, on right side of fuse box (visible after trim removal).
  • Look for black plastic bracket with two mounting holes (M4)
  • Purple CAN-BUS adapter connects here
2 Connect and Secure Adapter
  • Plug purple adapter into factory CAN-BUS socket
  • White triangle on adapter must align with triangle on socket
  • Use M4 × 8mm screws with T20 Torx
  • Torque: 2 Nm (hand-tight)
3 Configuration (After Power-On)
  • Enter PIN: 1617
  • Select: Ford → Ranger → 2018
Why "2018" works for all years: The CAN-BUS protocol for Ranger PX models (2015-2022) is identical; the adapter's firmware maps 2018 as the universal profile.
If adapter LED stays red after PIN entry: Double-check that CAN-BUS connector is fully seated (you should feel a solid click). Re-insert and listen for "click-click".

SECTION 7 – New Unit Connection

Connector Destination Force Required Cable Routing Tips
20-pin power harness New unit's Power In port Press tab down 0.5 kg, pull straight Run behind steering column; secure with zip-tie 30mm from connector
USB retention cable New unit's USB-A port (right) Press latch up 0.2 kg Keep away from steering wheel to avoid wear
GPS antenna New unit's GPS socket (top-right) Squeeze clip inward 0.3 kg Route along roof-rail using existing factory clip

CAN-BUS connector Adapter's purple plug Press release tab 0.4 kg Route away from steering column's moving parts; secure 40mm from adapter
What it should NOT feel like: A sloppy "wiggle" or partial insertion where pins are misaligned. If you feel any play, re-seat the connector.

SECTION 8 – Mounting and Securing

1 Align Mounting Brackets
Align mounting brackets on new unit with factory mounting holes (six holes).
  • Use M4 × 8mm screws with T20 Torx
  • Torque: 2-3 Nm (use torque wrench)
Look: Screws sit flush, no gap
Feel: Slight resistance at 2 Nm, then soft "click" of torque wrench
2 Tighten in Star Pattern
Tighten each screw in star pattern (1-4-2-5-3-6) to distribute stress evenly.
Sound: No grinding; just quiet "click" of wrench
3 Verify Installation
  • Check no pinched cables – gently pull each cable 2mm away from bracket
  • Screen should sit ≤0.5mm from dash surface
  • Secure excess cable with zip-ties (tighten to 15mm diameter)
If you hear metal-on-metal scrape while tightening: You're overtightening; stop and re-measure torque.

SECTION 9 – Initial Power-On Test

🎉 You're 75% done! The technical part is nearly complete. Time to see your new system come alive!
Step Action Expected Result What to Look/Listen For
9.1 Re-connect negative battery cable (tighten ≤5 Nm) Battery voltage restored Sound: No spark

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this head unit

No, it is normal to have plugs left over from your old stereo if upgrading to a Brummstadt head unit. The unit comes with its own components and antennas (GPS, 4G, microphone), so some factory plugs are simply not needed anymore. No need to worry. All core functions will work as intended. If anything doesn't perform as expected, you can always reach out to our customer support by clicking here Chat with Human Support or send an email to service@brummstadt.com.au.

Our cables are made to work with factory cameras, but sometimes they just don't. Some cameras work straight out of the box. Others may need a 12V to 6V step-down module or a different plug. In any case, contact our support team. We will help you find the right solution.

This is our promise to you. We stand not only for quality in product but also quality in after-sales support. While there may be many alternatives out there, the true value shows when it comes to replacements or product questions. We are here to help until everything works exactly as it should.

Yes, absolutely possible. If you only have the rear camera installed or are using your original factory camera, you can add a rocker switch to activate it while in drive. Just keep in mind that this is not plug and play and does require some basic wiring knowledge. A more convenient option is to use both our front and rear cameras, which are powered directly through the head unit. You can switch between them anytime, view both at once and even watch them while driving. This is especially useful for towing, caravans and off-road use.

Yes, absolutely. You can view both front and rear anytime, whether parked or driving. For more advanced setups, you can install multiple additional cameras using rocker switches or modified RCA inputs and switch between them freely. This requires high installation skill and is not plug and play, while with our front and rear camera setup it is plug and play.

Yes, absolutely. Steering wheel buttons are supported. Sometimes they work immediately after installation. Sometimes you configure them in the steering wheel app on the head unit. The process is simple: press the icon on the screen, press the button on your steering wheel, and assign the function. You can map any function to any button. For vehicles with more advanced ECUs, we supply CANbus modules. In those cases, you just select your car model inside the CAN app and it will sync automatically. Should anything be unclear or if you need help with setup, feel free to Chat with Human Support or email us at service@brummstadt.com.au.

1. Installation requires complete removal of factory radio and fascia panel. Turn ignition to ACC position, manually power off factory radio using power button, wait 5 seconds before disconnection to prevent top display from entering continuous scan mode. Failure to follow this sequence on PX2/PX3 models will result in persistent radio station searching on upper display.
2. CANBUS integration requires connection of supplied CANBUS decoder box between vehicle's CANBUS network and head unit. Yellow/green CANBUS wires must connect to pins 6 and 14 of vehicle's OBD port respectively. Red power wire connects to constant 12V (yellow wire in factory harness), black ground wire to chassis ground point. Incorrect CANBUS wiring will disable steering controls, door notifications, and vehicle information display.
3. Factory reverse camera retention requires RCA adapter connection from original 6-pin camera connector to yellow RCA video input on head unit. Camera power (red wire) must maintain 12V reverse signal connection. For aftermarket cameras, connect to dedicated reverse camera RCA input (typically marked CAM-IN) and configure in Settings > Car Settings > Reverse Camera > Aftermarket. Parking guidelines calibration available in Settings > Display > Parking Assist.
4. Climate control functionality depends on vehicle configuration. Vehicles with factory touchscreen climate controls: Navigate to Settings > Car Settings > AC Display > Enable, then Settings > CANBUS > Ford > Ranger > AC Type > Digital. Physical button models: Set AC Type to Manual. Climate controls remain operational through original buttons. Mixed configurations not supported.
5. Steering wheel control programming automatic via CANBUS for most functions. Volume up/down, track forward/back, mode, and phone buttons map directly. Voice command button requires Settings > Steering Wheel > Voice Assistant > Select App. Cruise control buttons remain connected to vehicle ECU and are not programmable. Custom button mapping available through Settings > Car Settings > Steering Wheel Study Mode.
6. Door open/close notifications require disconnection of original factory display and connection of upper display CANBUS cable (4-pin white connector) to supplied harness adapter. Without this connection, door status, fuel level, and temperature displays will not function on new unit. Upper display will show 'No Signal' if CANBUS communication fails.
7. Screen specifications: 9-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen, 1280×720 resolution, 500 nits brightness, 10-point multi-touch. Actual viewable area 8.4 inches diagonal. Screen ratio 16:9. Automatic brightness sensor requires connection of supplied photoresistor to ILLUM wire (orange/white in factory harness).
8. Apple CarPlay requires iPhone 5 or later with iOS 7.1 or later. Wired connection via USB-A port (2.0 speed). Wireless CarPlay requires iPhone 6 or later with iOS 9.0 or later, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled. Android Auto requires Android 6.0 or later. Wired connection standard, wireless requires Android 11 or later with 5GHz Wi-Fi support.
9. Initial configuration requires: Settings > Factory Settings > Password: 1617 > Car Model > Ford > Ranger > Select variant (PX2 2015-2018 or PX3 2018-2022) > CANBUS Protocol > RAISE HS-CAN. Incorrect model selection will cause steering controls, AC display, and door notifications to malfunction.
10. GPS antenna must be mounted on dashboard with clear view of sky. Magnetic base requires metal surface. For plastic dashboards, use supplied adhesive pad. GPS cable routes behind A-pillar trim to head unit GPS port. Initial satellite acquisition takes 2-5 minutes. Offline maps for Australia included, updates available via Wi-Fi.
11. Installation time approximately 90-120 minutes for experienced technicians. Required tools: plastic trim removal tools, Phillips screwdriver, 10mm socket, wire crimpers (if extending cables), multimeter for testing. Torque specification for mounting brackets: 8 Nm. Over-tightening may crack mounting tabs.
12. Power specifications: Operating voltage 11-14.8V DC, standby current <5mA, operating current 2-3A (typical), maximum current 10A with amplifier at full volume. Integrated amplifier 4×45W RMS. Pre-amp outputs 4V RMS. Protect head unit with 10A fuse maximum.
13. FM frequency range 87.5-108.0 MHz, AM frequency range 522-1620 kHz. DAB+ digital radio requires optional DAB+ antenna and module (sold separately). Radio reception quality depends on factory antenna condition and proper antenna adapter connection.
